Instructions for Post-Extraction Care

1. Bite on the rolled-up piece of gauze for 30 minutes following the extraction. If the bleeding continues, place a new piece of gauze or a sterile piece of linen (make sure your hands are very clean) and bite firmly for another 30 minutes.

2. If you have had a surgical extraction, you will experience some swelling. To reduce the swelling, place a cold pack on the affected area for 12 hours. The swelling will start to reduce after the 3rd day. If you have had stitches/sutures placed, do not stretch your lips to look at them. It may damage the wound.

3. Avoid alcohol and rinsing your mouth for the next 24 hours. Avoid strenuous activity (such as power-lifting, lifting heavy objects, etc).

4. You may experience pain when the anesthetic wears off, but this is usually mild or moderate. Take an analgesic for mild pain, but avoid aspirin. In case of very severe pain or if the bleeding does not stop within 24 hours, contact our Dental Clinic.

5. Do not smoke for one week. You may use nicotine patches, chewing gum containing nicotine can damage the socket. Smoking can cause a dry socket, which is quite painful. Also avoid playing wind instruments during this period.

6. After 24 hours, gently rise your mouth with warm salt water 3-5 times a day for 7 days. You should brush the tooth surfaces immediately adjacent to the socket, but avoid brushing the socket.

7. Avoid food for at least 2 hours or while the local anesthetic is still active. Eat well but avoid chewy, crisp, hard, or very hot foods.

8. Avoid touching or prodding the socket with your tongue or fingers.
